Hi, Friend,
Today I want to share my thoughts on some of the latest diet trends that just DO NOT MAKE ANY SENSE (to me; and it’s only MY humble opinion…) 🙂
But first, a little story about an outing that actually inspired this post……One sunny day after I picked my boys up from school and we headed to our neighborhood coffee shop to get me my daily java and for the boys to have their hot-chocolate treat while they’re catching up on their homework (yes, I buy them the hot chocolate, a small, 6 oz cup each), my kids spotted something on a shelf and brought it over to me… (Apparently they were really emotional about it!)
That something was a bottle with a clear liquid… BUT… when they shook that bottle, the stuff from the bottom of it mixed in with that clear liquid making the drink look…. black! Yes, I’m not kidding you. It was BLACK! (and that’s what made my kids so emotional). Curious about what that drink was I stared at the list of the ingredients…
Turned out that it was a trendy “cold-pressed juice”… mixed with… charcoal? …Or, maybe it was clay… Or… Never mind, I don’t remember what it was exactly by now because… in my mind that black stuff just wasn’t something EDIBLE!
And… perhaps there is something that I don’t know… But (once again, I’m speaking only for myself here) one thing I know for sure: no matter what, I am NOT GOING TO DRINK anything containing charcoal/coal/clay or alike! Because… no matter what health benefits may that mixture be claiming that it provides… I personally don’t consider experimenting on ourselves to be a good (safe) idea…
…But here’s another thing, that made me almost as amazed as the fact that some people may actually consider drinking from such bottles: the bottle was… $8! $8!!! But it’s not even about the money… I’ll spend an extra dollar on the high-quality maple syrup if that means that I’ll get the REAL maple syrup, not a maple-flavored high fructose corn syrup. Because that makes sense to me!
But you know what the worst part of it was? The worst part was that the food options in that coffee shop (I won’t name this coffee-shop here since mostly all the coffee-shops around carry basically the same stuff) were… $3 donuts, $4 cronuts, $3 cookies with artificially-colored icing on them, etc! All that Very Unhealthy stuff! And I’m not saying unhealthy here because of their high-calorie content. An avocado is also high in calories. I’m saying this because mostly all these treats are made with margarine, artificial colorings and stuff like that… The stuff that HARMS our bodies…
So here is what just DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME at all: people spending $12 on this “healthy” drink and a “fancy” donut… thinking that their snack was “healthy-isn”!!!… As if the “healthy” drink (which is a very questionable for me, since once again, I am NOT drinking charcoal!) would compensate for the totally unhealthy donut…
…And I know that all sorts of cold-pressed expensive juices are the latest diet trend! But….
How about a $0.25 organic apple with some water (which in most cases you can get for free if you ask the baristas nicely)? How about that fresh, full of fiber, vitamins and minerals whole food as a truly healthy snack option……And if you feel like you want to go a little decadent… I think that it’s perfectly OK to have a LITTLE BIT of hot chocolate with that apple, too. Because the milk is good for us… And the cocoa is good, too. And a little bit if sugar is OK! As you aren’t consuming a ton of it… Right?
Finally, here’s what I have to say about the latest diet trends and about trends in general… I think that it’s totally OK to be in tune with the latest trends!!! Because many of them derive from the human kind’s progress in science, art or in its consciousness. Which is GREAT NEWS, really! I’d never tell anyone to deny what’s around, live in their own bubble and think that they know better than everybody else.
BUT… The bottom line here is really that EVERY TREND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN WITH A GRAIN OF SALT!!! Use your own common sense, my dear friends! Think those trends through! And take the best of what the world has to offer!
